Recently, a Facebook post was circulated that wrote about the experience of a group of Indonesian citizens (WNI) who were victims of car glass breaking robbery in San Francisco (SF), United States.
From the account uploaded by Fika Puspitasari in the International Backpacker Facebook group, it was stated that the incident occurred when the victim and his partner traveled on a road trip to the USA with the route SF-Arizona (Grand Canyon)-Las Vegas-Los Angeles-SF on H-1 before his return to Indonesia.
"We arrived back in SF from LA at 19 San Francisco time. We rented 3 cars for this trip. One of the cars stopped by the supermarket before checking into the hotel because it was time to break the fast and they didn't have any food to break the fast." open Fika in the upload dated April 12, 2023.
Five minutes after parking the car in the basement of the supermarket, a friend of his forgot to bring his cell phone, which was still left in the car.
"How surprised he was when he returned to the parking lot to find that our car was being 'worked on' by thieves. Reflexively he shouted and ran towards the car. But unexpectedly the robber brandished a gun at him ... suddenly my friend fell down and another friend hid in the corner of the parking lot wall, " He explained.
Fika admitted that the incident passed so quickly and left her and her friends in shock. Meanwhile, other buyers immediately helped call the police who came to the scene 10 minutes later.
"The rear and side windshields were smashed. Several bags and suitcases were taken by the robbers. We asked the police how we should take care of this to the car rental company? The police explained that just give this report paper to the rental company. Later the rental will take care of the insurance if you insured this car rental," He explained.
According to Fika, dealing with car rentals is very easy, because they have installed vehicle insurance, so it is enough to return the car to the rental and sign some documents.
"It's as simple as that. There are no other additional costs for this incident. Furthermore, we hope that the matter of claiming lost items such as cellphones, laptops etc. will be easy too considering that we bought travel insurance before going on this trip. Pray for you," he concluded.
Quoted from GridOto.com, In the San Francisco area, thefts involving broken windshields are becoming more common.
In the NBC report, the act of breaking car windows is inseparable from the economic conditions of the United States which is in a recession coupled with slowing economic growth and rising interest rates.
This condition was also exacerbated by the rise in world oil prices, which caused fuel prices to soar.
The significant increase in fuel prices since 2021 and economic hardship have further fueled crime.
This can be seen on the street corners of San Francisco where homeless people are plentiful.
It's no wonder that crimes such as breaking car glass are common, as these thieves hope to take valuables inside the car.
